Summer is here and if you're looking for something fun to do with the kids that won't cost you a fortune, you'll want to head to
Strites' Orchard in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. We've been taking our grandchildren to the orchard several times a year and every time we go...the kids have a blast!
Strites' Orchard is a 100 year old family-owned and operated Farmer's Market in Harrisburg. They are open Monday through Saturday, hours vary each day. The family fun activities are held during the weekends and they rotate the themes.
Earlier this month we took our granddaughter to their Sweet Corn Festival. Admission was FREE. While there, she got her face painted with a butterfly design, did a coloring craft (a butterfly) and then she got creative and made a really pretty Dream Catcher out of pipe cleaners, feathers and beads. The adults who handle the children's activities are really friendly and the kids love them! Let me REPEAT, all of these kid activities were FREE! There was NO charge for the face painting, coloring crafts or for her to make the adorable dream catcher. Gotta love FREE!
After we were done with those activities, we all boarded the hayride (wagon pulled by a farm tractor) and went for a fun ride out on the orchard's farming grounds. This ride lasted a good 15-20 minutes in length and is a great way to get the kids outside and into the fresh air. Our little one's love experiencing farm life...even if it's only for one day!
If you want to buy some of the best and freshest produce in the area, you can shop their farmer's market to get in-season items. On the particular day we were there, we purchased tomatoes, onions, sweet corn (corn-on-the-cob), peaches, nectarines and some of the best blueberries we've ever tasted! Sure, their prices might be a little higher than the grocery store, but their produce is FRESHER and locally grown!
After all of the fun...we grabbed a hot bite to eat from the food truck by Official BBQ and Burgers. Their prices weren't too bad at all, we paid $6.00 per sandwich (pulled pork sandwiches) and I forget what we paid for the fries. We had to wait about 15 minutes for our food which wasn't too bad at all, considering they were a little busy when we placed our orders.
Our granddaughter wanted to enjoy some ice cream from their new Hershey's Hand-Dipped Ice Cream Shed (attached to the Farmer's Market) and she raved & raved about the ice cream. We were pleasantly surprised to see how many different flavors they carried and their prices were extremely reasonable too!
Throughout the summer months they hold various kid-friendly festivals and rotate the themes. Back in May of this year we attended the Strawberry Festival and our granddaughter had a great time there. During the fall season, we always go for hayrides, corn mazes, kid's activities and pumpkin picking at Strites' and it has been our family's tradition to do that for the past 6 years!

Strites' Orchard really seems to have a lot of family fun activities and I love that so many are free. In addition one can obviously pick up some good fresh produce.
