The Hereford Inlet in North Wildwood New Jersey is an inlet of water that sits behind the world famous Hereford Inlet Lighthouse and is fed by the Atlantic Ocean. The inlet isn't very big, but it's definitely beautiful! It's one of the prettiest areas on the entire Wildwood island!
Every time we visit the area we like to take a nice long walk up on the North Wildwood Seawall. It's a cement seawall that was built several years ago for visitors and residents to walk on. There are several entry points for you to get up onto the seawall and there are benches along the way so that you can sit down and enjoy the sights.
Right in the middle of the inlet is a strip of beach sand that almost looks like a little island, depending on your particular view. However, you can walk on the beach from one end to the other, so the inlet actually dips in from one side and flows behind it. I hope I'm explaining it correctly, hopefully my photograph above shows it better.
When we want to relax on the beach, this is the area we like to hit. It's less crowded than other areas and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous! Just like all of the Wildwood beaches, no beach tags or admission fees. That's right, you can use the Wildwood beaches for FREE and during the in-season they're lifeguard protected.
If you're a birdwatcher, you'll want to grab you binoculars and head to the wall to watch for them. We often see herons, egrets and other water fowl hanging out in the inlet and/or on the massive-sized rocks that line it. For the most part, they're used to people and often times you can get up close to photograph them.
There are many hotels, motels and condos within walking distance. If you're not lodging in the immediate area, you'll find a few streets with parking meters and a large parking lot nearby. You'll have to pay for parking during the in-season. There are porta-potties nearby, but if you want to use a restroom with running water, you'll need to head on up to the oceanfront area in North Wildwood to find a public restroom there.
In my honest opinion, the prettiest ocean views are located in North Wildwood and in the Hereford Inlet area. In addition, when I go shelling (looking for seashells), I always find the best ones when I'm out on the beach and walking through the surf right here. I've found gorgeous welk shells, conch shells, starfish, sand dollars and more while beachcombing in this specific area.
