New Wilmington is a small town located in
Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. You'll find the town located approximately 1 hour north of Pittsburgh and about 2 hours south of Erie, and is right in the heart of Amish country.
One of the things we love about this little old town is its laid-back vibe. You won't find large shopping malls, chain stores and big factories. It's one of those towns that has small mom & pop type of businesses and everyone is extremely friendly. It's the perfect place to visit if you want to escape the big city and relax.
During our romantic weekend getaway to New Wilmington we stayed at
The Jacqueline House of Wilmington Bed & Breakfast Inn. You'll find this B&B located on PA Route 956 in New Castle, just a short drive from New Wilmington, Volant and Mercer. The innkeeper Becky will make you feel right at home from the time you arrive until you depart.
The B&B offers 4 beautifully decorated suites...all with their own private bathrooms and one with a jacuzzi tub. We were really impressed with all of the little extras that you get when staying there and the entire home was comfortable and clean. Every evening you can enjoy a glass of complimentary wine, a gourmet breakfast every morning and during the summertime you can enjoy a swim in the outdoor pool.
To keep ourselves busy we went out and explored the surrounding area. We stumbled upon the historic
Westminster College which sits in downtown New Wilmington which offers 40 different degrees to their students. We really enjoyed driving through the campus.
Right down the street from the college we decided to stop into
Pizza Joe's for some dinner. We enjoyed a large pizza, bbq wings and French fries. Everything we had was delicious. I'm assuming Pizza Joe's must be pretty popular with the locals as they were extremely busy on a Friday night.
The next day we explored some of the markets that were located nearby. Some of these markets are owned & operated by the Old Order Amish who were selling some of their fresh produce from their farms, quilts, handmade crafts and other items. The one market that we stumbled upon had a very cool wall mural painted on its exterior by the
artist J. Muzacz, based out of Austin, Texas. That wall mural is absolutely incredible!!!
As you drive through town you'll notice a few designated spots where the Amish park their horse and buggies. You'll also see many of them going through town and all around the back country roads. During our short time in New Wilmington, we personally saw at least 30 different Amish horse and buggies! If you want to see the Old Order Amish, this is a great place to visit!
If you're a fan of old covered bridges, you'll find the historic
Banks Covered Bridge located in Volant Pennsylvania. It's about a 10 minute drive from town or a 5 minute drive from The Jacqueline House B&B. We've seen a lot of covered bridges over the years and I have to admit, this one is one of our favorites! Absolutely beautiful to see!
New Wilmington is the perfect romantic retreat for couples who are looking to just get away in a countryside location. The scenery is beautiful and we really enjoyed seeing some of the Amish going about their day-to-day business. A beautiful small town with plenty of country charm!
