You'll want to follow the map through the facility where you'll learn about the history of Turkey Hill Dairy, the cows, where milk comes from, how its packaged, delivered, etc. You can even try milking one of the mechanical cows which is always a big hit with the kids.
They do a really nice job of going beyond the dairy and giving you some history on the area, the people who live there, etc. You'll learn a little bit about The Underground Railroad, The Civil War, about some of the local River Towns, and more. We really enjoyed this history and cultural learning experience.
We're city people and don't know a lot about farming. There is an exhibit where you'll learn about the different breeds of dairy cattle, what kinds of food cows eat, where cows live, about calves, how much they generally way, how they're taken care of, and other fun bovine facts...like why cows chew their cud!
You'll spend a good bit of time learning about the dairy, the cows, about milk and then you'll learn how ice cream is made. Our grandchildren really learned a lot and had fun sitting in a vintage milk truck, participating in some of the hands-on activities, watching the mini videos, etc. It was really nice to see all of the kid-friendly activities that are available for the children to do.
We're huge fans of Turkey Hill Ice Tea and you'll find at least 2-3 bottles of it in our refrigerator at all times. They have a really nice exhibit where you'll learn about the different type's of tea, the history of tea, how iced tea is made, packaged, etc. So...that's where our iced tea comes from!
If you talk to our grandchildren they will tell you that their favorite part of the experience was the Tasting Lab where they had the opportunity to come up with their own unique ice cream flavor. What was really interesting is that all four of us came up with our own creation and each one was very different from the next. Wouldn't it be cool if we could do that every day? Yes!!!
Before ending our visit we headed into their on-site gift shop to pick up some souvenirs and items to bring home. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the majority of their items were very affordable, which is unusual for tourist attractions. They have items for kids and adults.
Overall...our family had a really nice time visiting the
Turkey Hill Experience and have decided to visit again next year. Even if you don't have children, we feel you would still enjoy visiting. A definite must-see and must-do when visiting Lancaster County.
