The Sandy Hook Lighthouse was built in 1764 and is the oldest working lighthouse in the United States. It stands 103 feet tall and is octagonal in shape. Surrounding the lighthouse are the keeper's house and several out buildings. It was built to help mariners guide their way in and out of the New York Harbor and the surrounding area.
In 1964 the lighthouse was listed as a National Historic Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places in October 1966. During the spring of 2000 the lighthouse was lovingly restored. It's managed by the National Park Service Rangers who give guided tours of the lighthouse. Visitors can visit and walk around the property at their own leisure.
The lighthouse is part of the New Jersey Lighthouse Tour. You can learn more about the Sandy Hook Lighthouse by visiting the National Park Service website. If you really enjoy lighthouses, we recommend that you take the tour which runs along the entire coastline of New Jersey.
