While visiting Dunkirk, New York we stumbled upon a historical marker giving you some brief history regarding the New York & Erie Railroads. The memorial plaque/marker is located right in front of the Market Shops at the Dunkirk Pier. Here's what it says.
On this site May 15th, 185, in Dunkirk, New York the first train on the New York and Erie Railroad arrived to link the Atlantic Seaboard with the Great Lakes.
From Piermont on the Hudson, the train carried President Millard Fillmore, Secretary of State Daniel Webster, Stephen Douglas, Congressmen, other public officials and president of the railroad Benjamin Loder.
The completion of this trunk line, which was at that time the longest in the world was acclaimed the "work" of the age.
- Erected by the Historical Society of Dunkirk, New York May 15, 1976.
If you're looking for the hisotrical marker for your waymarking documentation you'll find it right out front of the Market Shops located on the Dunkirk Pier. If you look close in the photograph above you'll see it right between the 2 colorful flags. You can park on the Dunkirk Pier and walk to it.
