Regarding the staff. We came into contact with 3 different staff members during our visit. All 3 were knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful. On the day that we were there they were busy but not overly-so. The atmosphere was nice, not too loud or noisy. We could sit at our table and hold conversations which was really nice. Visiting the Dunkirk Boardwalk Market and Pier

Dunkirk Boardwalk Market and Pier in New York

In early April we spent 3 days up in Dunkirk, New York for the Full Solar Eclipse Festival. If you're unfamiliar with the area, Dunkirk is located in Southwestern New York along the shoreline of Lake Erie. It's a beautiful drive up from Central Pennsylvania taking I-80 and then jumping off to visit some of the historic small towns along the way.

The Dunkirk Boardwalk isn't like the type's of boardwalks you find along the eastern seaboard. There's a small marketplace with less than 10 locally-owned businesses. There's a few eateries and gift shops. There's a paved walking trail that runs along the waterfront (see the last photograph in this post) for you to walk on, so handicap accessible.

Dunkirk Boardwalk Market and Pier in New York

Dunkirk's Pier is a large pier with free parking. It can get crowded during the busy tourist season, so you may need to find parking elsewhere on those days. There's park benches up on the pier for you to sit on to watch the fishing boats go in and out of the small harbor. During local events, bring along your own chairs to watch festivities up on the pier.

Dunkirk Pier in Dunkirk, New York

We were there for the Full Solar Eclipse Festival and met visitors from 7 different states during our stay! The festival drew quite the crowd! They set up 2 outdoor tents and had 2 live bands playing for the festivities. There was a cornhole court set up, an outdoor fire pit, an outdoor bar where you could buy alcoholic beverages and other fun activities going on.

64 on the Pier in Dunkirk, New York

64 on the Pier is a small restuarant and bar located right on the pier. It's VERY SMALL with just a little bit of seating indoors and seating outdoors. You can get just a handful of menu items and all kinds of alcoholic beverages. Boats can pull right up behind 64 on the Pier and dock. Go right in to grab a bite to eat and/or something to drink. On the eastern seaboard we call it "dockside dining".

Dunkirk's Pier, Boardwalk and Market in Dunkirk, New York

We had a great time hanging out on Dunkirk's Pier for the Full Solar Eclipse Festival and visiting the few little shops in the Marketplace. We felt 100% safe while attending the event thanks to the heavy Dunkirk police presence. Visitors and residents were friendly and everyone had a great time.

The Historic Dunkirk Lighthouse on the Banks of Lake Erie

Historic Dunkirk Lighthouse Lake Erie in New York

Earlier this month we took a 4 day road trip through Pennsylvania up to western New York to attend the Solar Eclipse Festival in Dunkirk. While visiting the area we stopped in to visit the historic Dunkirk Lighthouse along the banks of beautiful Lake Erie.

Hours of Operation: Varies according to the time of the year. Please see the scheduled posted on their website for additional information.

Admission: There's a small fee to tour the inside of the lighthouse. It's free to walk around the grounds and to visit the exhibits located on the property. Parking is free. Group rates are available.

The Dunkirk Lighthouse was built in 1875 with a stone tower standing 61 foot tall. The lighthouse is connected to the lightkeepers victorian-style home. It has a Fresnel Lens that was imported from Paris, France and is still in operation today. The light's range is approximately 27 miles.

Located on the property are several other out buildings and exhibits. You'll find the museum building, gift shop, public restroom, ship anchor's, a war tank, various memorials and information plaques, etc. There's quite a bit to look at during your visit.

In the photograph above you'll see a plaque and light on the property. Here's what the plaque has to say.

This plaque is dedicated to all the Keepers of the Dunkirk Lighthouse who served from 1826 to 1960 on the 200th anniversary of the United States Lighthouse Service, August 6th, 1989. It then lists the name's of all of the Dunkirk Lighthouse Keepers.

When visiting you'll want to allow 1 hour in your schedule if you're just walking around the grounds. If you plan on touring the inside of the lighthouse and climbing the stairs to the top you'll want to allow 2-3 hours in your schedule. Make sure you check their hours of operation before you go.

Parking is free! The grounds are fairly flat so those with walking issues should have no problem. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for current weather conditions. To the right of the lighthouse you'll see a colorful building that contains the public restrooms. There's no public beach access.

Visiting the Aquarium of Niagara at Niagara Falls

Aquarium of Niagara at Niagara Falls

Every few years we enjoy taking a trip up to Niagara Falls and exploring the area. The last time we were up there we spent 3 days exploring Niagara Falls State Park, the Maid of the Mist, the Wax Museum and several of the area's local restaurants. We always find something new to see and do while we're there.

On our most recent trip we visited the Aquarium of Niagara located on Whirlpool Street in Niagara Falls, New York. It's open 7 days a week from 9 AM to 5 PM and is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Admission ranges from $14.95 to $17.95 per person. It's a really nice, family-friendly place to visit.
Aquarium of Niagara at Niagara Falls

Aquarium of Niagara at Niagara Falls

You can purchase your admission tickets online or at the door. You'll have to pay for parking $5.00 per car. The facility is handicap accessible. When visiting the aquarium we recommend that you allow at least 2 hours in your schedule so that you can see and do all of the activities that are available. Wear comfortable walking shoes and leave bags & packages in your vehicle.

While at the aquarium you'll see all kinds of different animals. You'll see otters, penguins, birds, fish, jellyfish, stingrays, seals, horseshoe crabs, Florida horse conch, eels, turtles, sharks, octopus, frogs, and more! They have a really nice selection and they offer interactive animal encounters. You can obtain all of that information from their official website
Aquarium of Niagara at Niagara Falls

What's really nice is that you take your own self-guided tour throughout the aquarium. You can take your time and really experience it. Throughout the year they offer various educational programs for adults and/or children. The classes are affordable and offer a unique hands-on experience.

We had a great time during our visit and are looking forward to taking both of our grandchildren the next time we visit Niagara Falls.

The Historic Blackwell Island Lighthouse in New York City

The historic Blackwell Island Lighthouse is located in New York City, New York. The island is known by three different names: Blackwell Island, Roosevelt Island and Welfare Island. It sits on the northeast tip of the island and was built in 1872 by architect James Renwick Jr. When you look at it...you'll see that it was built in the Gothic Revival Style.

Over the years various facilities have been located on the island such as the New York Lunatic Asylum, a city hospital and a famous penitentiary that housed some of the most dangerous criminals from the city. There are many legends, rumors and gossip that surrounds the lighthouse and the island...some that is true and some not. I guess it depends on who you ask.
Blackwell Island Lighthouse in New York City

Blackwell Island Lighthouse stands 50 feet tall and made from stone that was mined from the island by inmates who resided at the penitentiary. The tower is made of stone and constructed in an octagonal shape. The light was operational until 1940 and over the years restoration was conducted until finally completed in 1998.

The lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and was designated a New York City Landmark list in 1976. You can get to Roosevelt Island by taking the Roosevelt Island Tram from Manhattan, the subway train, or by car via the 36th Avenue Bridge from Queens. If your a tourist and looking for some of the best views...consider taking a New York City boat tour.

Cooperstown to Nashville on the Ultimate Father-Daughter Road Trip

Cooperstown to Nashville on the Ultimate Father-Daughter Road Trip
By Rob Tischler, Co-Owner of Allstar Coaches

With Father’s Day right around the corner, you might be struggling to find gift ideas for dear old dad. At this point, he probably has all the ties he’ll ever need, and one more electronic gadget will only add to the clutter. So instead of buying him a generic greeting card and another thing, try spending your money on a different kind of gift this year.

Invest in Something Deeper

There’s something that speaks to the deep need for connection between fathers and their daughters. Unfortunately, between career and family obligations, and all the other responsibilities that come with a full life these days, there’s just not much time left over for that sort of thing.

So why not use Father’s Day as a handy excuse for reconnecting with your dad by planning an unforgettable experience you both can share? One that lends itself to long conversations and plenty of father-daughter bonding — like a long road trip.

Here’s what the ultimate father-daughter excursion might look like.

Start by Gearing Up

When you hear road trip, you probably think about traveling by car. But for this dream trip, you and your dad are renting an RV and traveling in style. No grubby roadside motels or greasy spoon diners here. Instead, you’ll be cruising around in your home-away-from-home, complete with it’s own kitchen and bathroom.

Don’t forget to stock up with the road trip essentials you’ll need for your trip, like plenty of beef jerky, bottled water and beer for the campfire. Then, once your mobile pantry is stocked and the gas tank is filled, you’re ready to hit the road.
Cooperstown New York

Swing Away in Cooperstown, New York

Your trip begins in upstate New York with a pilgrimage every true sports fan should make. According to myth, baseball was invented right here, in the small village of Cooperstown. In the years since, the town has embraced the sport, hosting the Baseball Hall of Fame Museum and its annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Walk just two blocks down the road and you’ll arrive at historic Doubleday Field — considered the birthplace of the game — now home to concerts, ceremonies, and baseball tournaments. Throughout the summer months, there’s also a regular slate of youth and college summer league games being played throughout the town, so you and your dad will kick off this once-in-a-lifetime road trip with a healthy dose of all-American nostalgia.

Just don’t forget to have that catch before you leave.
Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania

Review History at Gettysburg National Military Park

From Cooperstown, you and your dad will travel southeast down I-88 towards Pennsylvania. As you cross over the border, join up with I-81 and drive through the heart of the state until arriving at the second stop in your father-daughter adventure: the Gettysburg National Military Park.

For three days in 1863, soldiers of the Union and Confederate armies fought here in what would become the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War. The Union Army ultimately prevailed, and historians now consider the Battle of Gettysburg to be a turning point in the war. In an effort to preserve this hallowed ground, The National Park Service took control of the site in 1933 and it’s been open to the public ever since.

Today, visitors to the park can tour many of the battle’s key locations with the help of one of Gettysburg’s many Licensed Battlefield Guides. They can also visit the David Wills House, where Abraham Lincoln put the finishing touches on his Gettysburg Address and take a virtual tour of the National Cemetery where many of the battle’s dead are buried. No matter how you spend your day, this spot is sure to spark some important conversations.
Louisville Kentucky

Catch the Spirit in Louisville

Leaving Gettysburg, you’ll spend a long day in the RV traveling through Maryland, the mountains of West Virginia and into Louisville, Kentucky for the next portion of your trip. Lousiville is the state’s largest city, and birthplace of famous Americans like Abraham Lincoln, Muhammad Ali and George Clooney. It’s also home to many of the finest bourbon distillers in the world, which should come as no surprise. In the late 1700’s, a baptist preacher named Elijah Craig invented this new take on whiskey in nearby Fayette County, and Kentucky distillers have been busy perfecting his original recipe for more than 200 years.

Once you’ve arrived in Louisville, stretch your legs during a tour of one of the city’s fine distilleries like Angel’s Envy or The Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. You can also visit many of the city’s best bars and restaurants — each dedicated to the heritage and culture of the state’s native spirit — by following Louisville's Urban Bourbon Trail. You can pick up your trail map at The Louisville Visitor Center.

One thing’s for sure, after a day or two spent sampling America’s only native spirit, you and your dad will be true bourbon experts — at least compared to your family and friends.
National Corvette Museum in Kentucky

Give it some Gas in Bowling Green

Now that you’ve passed the midway point of your trip, it’s time to indulge dad’s love of the great American sports car. Catch I-65 south out of Louisville to Bowling Green. After about two hours, take exit 28 and you’ll find the National Corvette Museum.

Dedicated to the proud history of this iconic car, the Corvette Museum sits inside a 115,000 square foot facility and features 80 different models, one-of-a-kind concept cars, as well as photos, videos and other memorabilia from the brand’s storied history. If simply looking isn't enough, the museum also offers a more hands-on experience at their nearby Motorsports Park. Visitors can test drive their own cars on the motorsport racetrack, or borrow one of the park’s Corvettes for a few hot laps.

After ogling some of the most beautiful cars ever made, you’ll jump back on the open road with a bit of gasoline in your veins, and primed for the final stop on this ultimate father-daughter road trip.
Nashville Tennessee

Experience the Scene in Nashville, Tennessee

Just an hour outside of Bowling Green sits Nashville, Tennessee — known as “Music City” and the final stop on this once-in-a-lifetime trip. There’s so much to do in this amazing city, that it’s hard to know where to start. You can’t go wrong, however, with a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. There, you’ll learn the history of this all-American form of music and how it’s formed the backbone of this All-American town. Then, hit a show at the Ryman Auditorium or the historic Grand Ole Opry.

After you’ve had your fill of music, stroll through the restaurants and shops in one of Nashville’s neighborhoods like Hillsboro Village or 12South. You’ll get a great view of how the locals live in this one-of-a-kind place.

No trip to Nashville would be complete without sampling the city’s most famous dish: hot chicken. This extra-spicy style of fried chicken is a Nashville delicacy, and no place does it better than Prince’s Hot Chicken. Just don’t forget to order a cold drink with your meal, because you’ll probably need it.

Home Now, and Closer than You Were Before

Your road trip’s finished and together, you and your dad have traveled more than 1,000 miles through six different states while visiting five iconic American locations, sharing an experience unlike any other. Along the way, you’ve laughed, talked long into the night, reminisced about the good old days and hopefully made plans for the future. Most importantly, when you return to your normal lives at home, you’ll be closer than you were before you left.

Of course, not everyone will be able to take this exact trip. But hopefully you’ll still use this Father’s Day as an opportunity to connect with your dad on a different and deeper level — even if it’s just sitting on a porch swing while enjoying a cold beer.

Niagara Falls Wall Mural by Artist Jesse Page

Niagara Falls in New York
We are big fans of hand-painted street art and outdoor wall murals, so when we travel...we're always on the look-out for it. Often times you'll find this kind of street art painted on the front, sides or back of businesses, on bridges and under-passes, on cement barriers and so forth. A lot of this type of artwork is done by amateurs and other's are done by well-known artists.

While on a trip up to Niagara Falls in New York, we spotted an outdoor wall mural that was hand-painted by artist Jesse Page on the side of a building (Niagara Falls Haunted House). I can't remember the exact street, but if you're walking down to Niagara Falls State Park, you'll find it on the street leading to the main entrance into the park.
Niagara Falls Wall Mural by Artist Jesse Page

The mural depicts Niagara Falls with a Canadian Flag and an American Flag. If you look closely you'll see the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls. The first two waterfalls are on the American side and Horseshoe Falls is on the Canadian side. The artist's name is on the right side of the wall mural.

We love photographing the street art and wall murals that we find while traveling, so this one was a great addition to our collection. It's the ONLY outdoor wall mural that we spotted while in Niagara Falls. When we visit again next year, I'll be on the lookout to see if we can find any more.

The Sights You'll See While Driving from Buffalo to Niagara Falls New York

Buffalo City Skyline in New York
A couple of months ago we took a road trip through western New York starting in Salamanca and ending up in Niagara Falls. Over the past few months we've written several different travel features and you can find all of them in our New York section right here on the blog.

While cleaning out some of our photographs from our road trip, we came across several of them that we had taken while driving from Buffalo up to Niagara Falls. These photo's feature some of the sights you'll see while on the drive up. Instead of just deleting them, we thought we would share them with all of you in this fun and informal post!
Grand Island New York - Toll Bridge

The first photograph in this post features the pretty skyline of the city of Buffalo. We took this one while city in a traffic jam on the interstate that runs through the downtown area of the city. It was stop & go and stop & go traffic for about two hours! What normally would take 10-15 minutes, took 2 hours to complete! Sigh.

We were driving on Interstate 190 and came across a toll bridge to get on Grand Island New York. If my memory serves me correctly, the toll fee was $1.00 and was the ONLY toll road that we encountered on this section of our road trip. I'm not a HUGE fan of big bridges, but this one wasn't bad at all.
Martin's Fantasy Island Amusement Park - Grand Island in New York

The third photograph features Martin's Fantasy Island Amusement Park that is located on Grand Island in New York. It sits right beside the main highway that runs across Grand Island. We passed by it and could see it from the highway, but sadly it looked closed on that particular day. The park has over 35 amusement rides and slides, along with carnival style games for the entire family to enjoy.
Bridge Art - Niagara Falls Expressway in New York

Once you get onto the Niagara Expressway you'll pass underneath a bridge that was beautifully decorated with a sailboat, water skiing and other designs that are popular in this particular area. You'll see that in the photograph above. The water that you see on the left in the photograph is the mighty Niagara River! It's a beautiful drive down the Niagara Expressway with plenty of scenic views!
Welcome to the City of Niagara Falls New York - sign

Within minutes, we saw the Welcome to the city of Niagara Falls sign! We knew that once we saw the welcome sign that we were almost to our final destination. Every time we travel, I always try to get a photo of the "welcome to state" and/or "welcome to city" signs that we see.
City of Niagara Falls New York

Once we arrived at our destination...we were standing on the 20th floor in our hotel and shot this picture out of our room window. It shows you some of the buildings in the downtown area...looking from the American side, over to the the Canadian side. The bridge that you see is called Rainbow Bridge and it will take you back and forth between both cities...Niagara Falls New York and Niagara Falls Canada. The tall buildings in the background are the hotels, motels and casino's on the Canadian side.
Niagara Falls State Park - Waterfalls

To finish up with this fun travel post, we thought we would include one photograph of Niagara Falls. We took this photo while visiting Niagara Falls State park. It was shot while standing on the United States side, looking over to the Canadian side. It shows all three of the waterfalls: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls.

If you're interested in learning more about Niagara Falls State Park, places to stay, things to do and great places to eat, you can find all of those recommendations right here on our travel blog.

Catch a New York Yankees Baseball Game at Yankee Stadium

New York Yankees Baseball Game at Yankee Stadium
My family enjoys all kinds of different professional sports. We enjoy going out to see professional football, baseball, hockey, soccer and basketball games. When it comes to MLB...I'm a huge NY Yankees fan, while my husband is a Phillies fan. While we've been to Phillies games before, this was our first time visiting Yankee Stadium in New York.

The Yankee Stadium is located in the Bronx, New York and was approximately a 2 hour and 45 minute drive from central Pennsylvania. We went to a home game during a weekend, which helped us to avoid weekday rush-hour traffic. The Bronx is a borough in New York City, you'll want to map out the best route before you plan your trip.
New York Yankees Baseball Game at Yankee Stadium

New York Yankees Baseball Game at Yankee Stadium

This is a newer baseball stadium that opened in 2009 and cost $2.3 billion dollars to make. Wow, that's one expensive stadium. However, as you walk through and around the stadium, you'll totally see how that money was spent! According to Wikipedia, it was the most expensive stadium ever built.

You'll want to dress appropriately for the season and wear comfortable walking shoes. You'll be doing a lot of walking from your parked vehicle to inside and around the stadium. Some of that includes climbing steps and so forth.
New York Yankees Baseball Game at Yankee Stadium

Mariano Rivera - New York Yankees MLB

As you walk around you'll see all kinds of different in-house concession stands where you can grab a bite to eat or a something to wet your whistle. You'll also find numerous Yankee Fan Shops where you can pick up jerseys, pennants, souvenirs and all kinds of other gift items that revolve around the New York Yankees team. I found that a lot of these items were expensive, so I only picked up 2 small things during our visit.
New York Yankees Baseball - Jackie Robinson Uniform Number Retired

I was really impressed with all of the awards, memory walls, player dedications, etc. that you'll see around the interior and exterior of the stadium. When you see them, it helps to really put into perspective how successful the Yankees have been over the years and how many extraordinary players they've had. One of the most successful MLB teams ever!

The Yankees won that particular home game and we had a great time watching them play and visiting Yankee Stadium! The drive was a lot nicer than we thought it would be and we are hoping to catch another NY Yankees home game again next year!

The Niagara Falls State Park, established in 1885, is the oldest state park in America. In my personal opinion, the best time to visit the falls is during late spring, early summer and during the early fall seasons.

- Best Scenic Road Trip: We enjoy visiting western New York...starting at the Pennsylvania border near Bradford and taking a scenic road trip up through the state until we reach Niagara Falls. It's a beautiful and very scenic drive without all of the interstate congestion. We enjoy driving through all of the mountains and seeing the small towns along the way.
Ski Resort in Western New York

New York is hustling and bustling with a wide range of activities all year long! During the summer you can enjoy the beach, visiting tourist attractions, boating, cruising, camping, hiking, fishing, etc. During the winter season you can go ice skating, ice fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, etc. Every year when the beginning of the fall season kicks in, we like to drive through the state to check out all of the beautiful fall foliage. Spring is a great time to visit if you enjoy visiting botanical gardens, birding, fishing, hiking and camping.

When you're thinking about visiting this great state, think outside the box and try visiting some of their other beautiful areas...other than New York City.

A Romantic Weekend Getaway to Niagara Falls

A Romantic Weekend Getaway to Niagara Falls
Looking for a romantic weekend getaway? If so, we highly recommend visiting Niagara Falls in New York. If you live in central Pennsylvania, you can reach Niagara Falls by car in 6 to 7 1/2 hours, depending on the route that you take and traffic. We wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary so we arrived around 1 PM on a Friday and checked out of our hotel around lunchtime on Sunday.

We stayed at the luxurious Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino which is beautifully located within a short walk from Niagara Falls State Park. Our suite was spaceous and included a whirlpool tub, sitting area, comfortable bed, large shower & bathroom, and we had a scenic view of the area. Our room was beautifully decorated and extremely clean!

La Cascata Restaurant at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino

During our stay we had fun playing games in the casino, visiting the spa and on one evening we enjoyed a delicious dinner at La Cascata, which offers fine Italian dining. If you love Italian food, La Cascata is definitely the place to be. Everything about this restaurant is top-notch and then some! We loved the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino and will definitely stay there again when visiting the area.
Niagara Falls Haunted House in New York

Friday evening we took a walk and stumbled upon the Niagara Falls Haunted House attraction. It's located within walking distance from the State Park. You pay an admission fee and go inside the haunted house for some scary fun. Okay, it wasn't too scary at all, but it was definitely a fun thing to do during our trip!
Niagara Falls State Park in New York

On Saturday we headed down to Niagara Falls State Park and walked around for several hours. There are monuments, park benches and tourist attractions right inside the park. We enjoyed the "paid" trolley tour through the park which was really nice. You'll find a gift shop, walking trails, the trolley tour and the Maid of the Mist boat tours all located within the park.

Niagara Falls in New York

The weather on Saturday was beautiful, so we decided to pay the admission fee and take a ride on the Maid of the Mist. This boat tour gets you up close and personal with the bottom of the waterfalls. You'll get stunning views of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls. They will give you a plastic rain jacket to wear during your boat ride and trust me, you want to wear it. You will get wet!!! We highly recommend the Maid of the Mist boat tours when visiting the falls.
Niagara Wax Museum in Niagara Falls New York

While walking back to our hotel we stumbled upon the Niagara Wax Museum of History and decided to go in. On the day that we visited, we were the ONLY customers there. We were able to take our time through the entire museum checking out all of the beautiful exhibits. If you enjoy wax museums, you'll enjoy this one, especially with its Niagara Falls twists and history. After visiting the museum, you can do some souvenir shopping in their on-site gift shop which offers jewelry, home decor, toiletries, gifts, books, souvenirs and collectibles.
Hard Rock Cafe in Niagara Falls New York

To round off our day...we decided to have dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe which was pretty busy when we arrived. It took awhile for us to get seated and the wait-staff was a tad slow. Regardless, we ordered burgers and fries, and enjoyed our meals. If you're looking for casual dining that offers your classic American cuisine, the Hard Rock Cafe is the place to be.

We spent 48 hours in Niagara Falls, New York and had a wonderful time. There are a lot of cool things to see and do in this old, historic town and Niagara Falls should be on every traveler's bucket list. We are hoping to visit again in the very near future, perhaps on our upcoming 35th wedding anniversary next year.
