The Country Legends Wall Mural in Nashville Features 14 Country Music Superstars

While on a road trip through the great state of Tennessee we decided to spend the weekend in Nashville. At the hotel that we were staying they recommended a few local tourist attractions for us to check out and I have to say...they're recommendations were great! One of the things on the list was this famous Country Legends Wall Mural that appears on the outside wall of the Legends Corner on Lower Broadway.

GPS Users: 428 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37203-3931

The wall mural features the likenesses of Tim McGraw, Loretta Lynn, Blake Shelton, Dierks Bentley, Willie Nelson, Taylor Swift, Johnny Cash, Keith Urban, Merle Haggard, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks. My husband is a big Reba McEntire fan, so he was quite pleased to see her depicted in the mural.

Legends Corner is a country music bar and it features four live performances every day. They're open 7-days a week from 10:00 AM to 3:00 AM. You can check out the bar's website for a current performers list and scheduled times. When you walk through the doors you'll notice that all of the walls are adorned with memorabilia from a lot of the country music superstars that helped put Nashville on the map or launched their careers from there. You could spend hours just looking at all of the memorabilia hanging on the walls!

Note: You can double-click on the image to have it open up in a new browsing window and in an enlarged size. This will allow you to see the details up-close while keeping our travel blog mobile reader friendly. Thanks!

Cooperstown to Nashville on the Ultimate Father-Daughter Road Trip

Cooperstown to Nashville on the Ultimate Father-Daughter Road Trip
By Rob Tischler, Co-Owner of Allstar Coaches

With Father’s Day right around the corner, you might be struggling to find gift ideas for dear old dad. At this point, he probably has all the ties he’ll ever need, and one more electronic gadget will only add to the clutter. So instead of buying him a generic greeting card and another thing, try spending your money on a different kind of gift this year.

Invest in Something Deeper

There’s something that speaks to the deep need for connection between fathers and their daughters. Unfortunately, between career and family obligations, and all the other responsibilities that come with a full life these days, there’s just not much time left over for that sort of thing.

So why not use Father’s Day as a handy excuse for reconnecting with your dad by planning an unforgettable experience you both can share? One that lends itself to long conversations and plenty of father-daughter bonding — like a long road trip.

Here’s what the ultimate father-daughter excursion might look like.

Start by Gearing Up

When you hear road trip, you probably think about traveling by car. But for this dream trip, you and your dad are renting an RV and traveling in style. No grubby roadside motels or greasy spoon diners here. Instead, you’ll be cruising around in your home-away-from-home, complete with it’s own kitchen and bathroom.

Don’t forget to stock up with the road trip essentials you’ll need for your trip, like plenty of beef jerky, bottled water and beer for the campfire. Then, once your mobile pantry is stocked and the gas tank is filled, you’re ready to hit the road.
Cooperstown New York

Swing Away in Cooperstown, New York

Your trip begins in upstate New York with a pilgrimage every true sports fan should make. According to myth, baseball was invented right here, in the small village of Cooperstown. In the years since, the town has embraced the sport, hosting the Baseball Hall of Fame Museum and its annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Walk just two blocks down the road and you’ll arrive at historic Doubleday Field — considered the birthplace of the game — now home to concerts, ceremonies, and baseball tournaments. Throughout the summer months, there’s also a regular slate of youth and college summer league games being played throughout the town, so you and your dad will kick off this once-in-a-lifetime road trip with a healthy dose of all-American nostalgia.

Just don’t forget to have that catch before you leave.
Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania

Review History at Gettysburg National Military Park

From Cooperstown, you and your dad will travel southeast down I-88 towards Pennsylvania. As you cross over the border, join up with I-81 and drive through the heart of the state until arriving at the second stop in your father-daughter adventure: the Gettysburg National Military Park.

For three days in 1863, soldiers of the Union and Confederate armies fought here in what would become the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War. The Union Army ultimately prevailed, and historians now consider the Battle of Gettysburg to be a turning point in the war. In an effort to preserve this hallowed ground, The National Park Service took control of the site in 1933 and it’s been open to the public ever since.

Today, visitors to the park can tour many of the battle’s key locations with the help of one of Gettysburg’s many Licensed Battlefield Guides. They can also visit the David Wills House, where Abraham Lincoln put the finishing touches on his Gettysburg Address and take a virtual tour of the National Cemetery where many of the battle’s dead are buried. No matter how you spend your day, this spot is sure to spark some important conversations.
Louisville Kentucky

Catch the Spirit in Louisville

Leaving Gettysburg, you’ll spend a long day in the RV traveling through Maryland, the mountains of West Virginia and into Louisville, Kentucky for the next portion of your trip. Lousiville is the state’s largest city, and birthplace of famous Americans like Abraham Lincoln, Muhammad Ali and George Clooney. It’s also home to many of the finest bourbon distillers in the world, which should come as no surprise. In the late 1700’s, a baptist preacher named Elijah Craig invented this new take on whiskey in nearby Fayette County, and Kentucky distillers have been busy perfecting his original recipe for more than 200 years.

Once you’ve arrived in Louisville, stretch your legs during a tour of one of the city’s fine distilleries like Angel’s Envy or The Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. You can also visit many of the city’s best bars and restaurants — each dedicated to the heritage and culture of the state’s native spirit — by following Louisville's Urban Bourbon Trail. You can pick up your trail map at The Louisville Visitor Center.

One thing’s for sure, after a day or two spent sampling America’s only native spirit, you and your dad will be true bourbon experts — at least compared to your family and friends.
National Corvette Museum in Kentucky

Give it some Gas in Bowling Green

Now that you’ve passed the midway point of your trip, it’s time to indulge dad’s love of the great American sports car. Catch I-65 south out of Louisville to Bowling Green. After about two hours, take exit 28 and you’ll find the National Corvette Museum.

Dedicated to the proud history of this iconic car, the Corvette Museum sits inside a 115,000 square foot facility and features 80 different models, one-of-a-kind concept cars, as well as photos, videos and other memorabilia from the brand’s storied history. If simply looking isn't enough, the museum also offers a more hands-on experience at their nearby Motorsports Park. Visitors can test drive their own cars on the motorsport racetrack, or borrow one of the park’s Corvettes for a few hot laps.

After ogling some of the most beautiful cars ever made, you’ll jump back on the open road with a bit of gasoline in your veins, and primed for the final stop on this ultimate father-daughter road trip.
Nashville Tennessee

Experience the Scene in Nashville, Tennessee

Just an hour outside of Bowling Green sits Nashville, Tennessee — known as “Music City” and the final stop on this once-in-a-lifetime trip. There’s so much to do in this amazing city, that it’s hard to know where to start. You can’t go wrong, however, with a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. There, you’ll learn the history of this all-American form of music and how it’s formed the backbone of this All-American town. Then, hit a show at the Ryman Auditorium or the historic Grand Ole Opry.

After you’ve had your fill of music, stroll through the restaurants and shops in one of Nashville’s neighborhoods like Hillsboro Village or 12South. You’ll get a great view of how the locals live in this one-of-a-kind place.

No trip to Nashville would be complete without sampling the city’s most famous dish: hot chicken. This extra-spicy style of fried chicken is a Nashville delicacy, and no place does it better than Prince’s Hot Chicken. Just don’t forget to order a cold drink with your meal, because you’ll probably need it.

Home Now, and Closer than You Were Before

Your road trip’s finished and together, you and your dad have traveled more than 1,000 miles through six different states while visiting five iconic American locations, sharing an experience unlike any other. Along the way, you’ve laughed, talked long into the night, reminisced about the good old days and hopefully made plans for the future. Most importantly, when you return to your normal lives at home, you’ll be closer than you were before you left.

Of course, not everyone will be able to take this exact trip. But hopefully you’ll still use this Father’s Day as an opportunity to connect with your dad on a different and deeper level — even if it’s just sitting on a porch swing while enjoying a cold beer.

5 Things Everyone Should Know About the Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Pigeon Forge

Visiting Pigeon Forge 5 Things Everyone Should Know About Alcatraz East
Each year, around 10 million people visit the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area. Whether vacationing with their children or enjoying time on their own, most are searching for unforgettable memories while visiting the area. One place that should be at the top of everyone’s list is Alcatraz East Crime Museum, a new attraction on the Parkway that provides both an educational and entertaining time, and includes information and activities for the whole family.

“We’ve had an amazing response since opening our doors in December,” states Janine Vaccarello, chief operating officer for Alcatraz East, “We have something for all ages, and most families spend 2-3 hours going through the exhibits. Guests walk away saying they knew they would love it, but it was better than expected, and that makes us feel very proud.”

While visitors to the area enjoy taking a hike in the Great Smoky Mountains while visiting this vacation destination, Alcatraz East offers a break from the outdoor activities. Here are 5 things everyone should know about Alcatraz East Crime Museum when visiting the Pigeon Forge area:

1. America’s Favorite Subject. With all the movies and TV shows related to the topic of crime, this is a must see. The museum features five themes that give visitors a glimpse into notorious crime history, forensic science, law enforcement, our justice system and pop culture. There are over 100 interactives throughout the museum, providing visitors with a hands-on experience.

2. It’s Not About Alcatraz. Although it’s part of the name and the famous prison inspired this attraction, Alcatraz East is a crime museum, featuring an in depth look at American crime history, with artifacts from different eras and topics. The one-of-kind building was designed as a combination of Tennessee’s first state prison from 1898, and guard towers inspired by the Alcatraz lighthouse in California. The two-story building offers over 25,000 square feet of exhibit space.

3, One-of-a-Kind Artifacts. From white-collar crimes to Old West gunslingers, the museum features original artifacts from Jesse James to Whitey Bulger. Things to watch for include the famous O.J. Simpson chase white Bronco, John Dillinger’s death mask, Al Capone’s rosary, a submachine gun from the movie Scarface, Ted Bundy’s VW Beetle. Tennessee is well represented, with objects such as the Old Smoky electric chair and moonshine stills as well as notable Dr. William Bass, highlighting his achievements- which advanced forensic anthropology.

4. Interact with the Museum. Kids (and their parents) can have fun and learn at the same time through the museum’s Top Detective Challenge. Follow clues throughout the museum to solve the crime of a stolen artifact, and receive a prize if you crack the case! There is also an opportunity for parents and kids to enjoy the thrill of The Heist Laser Maze (think Thomas Crown Affair!).

5. Temporary Exhibits. Beginning mid-May, Alcatraz East debuted the first of its temporary exhibit programs, which will be an annual rotation in two areas of the museum. Through April 2018, “Ivory, Tortoise Shell & Fur: The Ugly Truth About Wildlife Trafficking will reveal how endangered species are effected by poaching and what the public can do to help end the practice.

“Every year, families make lifetime memories here in the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area,” states Vaccarello, “We are happy to now be a part of those memories, giving them a look at history, crime prevention, while having an interactive experience.”

Alcatraz East officially opened December 16, 2016. The new crime museum is located at the entrance to The Island, at 2757 Parkway in Pigeon Forge, near the Margaritaville Hotel and Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen.

The 25,000 square foot museum is designed with a jail façade, has a star-studded board of experts who make up the Advisory Board, including Jim Willett, a retired prison warden, Anthony Rivera, a combat veteran and Navy SEAL chief, and Judge Belvin Perry, Jr., who is best known for the Casey Anthony trial.

General admission tickets are $14.95 for children, $24.95 for adults. Group ticket sales are available. The museum will be open 365 days per year, from 10 am to 9 pm, with the last ticket sold 60 minutes before closing. Please visit the Alcatraz East website to learn more.

Maryville’s Vibrant Downtown Attracts New Businesses and Residents

Nestled in the foothills of the scenic Smoky Mountains with a quaint yet vibrant downtown, it’s no wonder Maryville, Tennessee is recognized for its quality of life.

Situated in a prime locale, this East Tennessee city is just 30 miles from picturesque Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, providing hiking trails, stunning waterfalls, over 1,500 kinds of flora and diverse wildlife. Yet it still has the convenience of a regional airport less than five miles away and access to major interstates

The beauty of the area and convenience draws a wide range of businesses with an abundance of job opportunities. Headquartered in Maryville are companies like national restaurant chain Ruby Tuesday, women’s apparel chain Altar’d State, DENSO – a manufacturing company with 3500 employees, Clayton Homes and Newell Rubbermaid, just to name some.
Maryville Tennessee

Now is an exciting time for Downtown Maryville. At the end of 2016, the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development announced Maryville’s achievement of a Main Street accreditation. The designation has opened the city up to grant opportunities that will aid in the downtown’s revitalization and economic development efforts—an initiative begun in 2007.

As the area grows and the development efforts gain traction, businesses are attracted to historic Downtown Maryville, with its charming character and bustling activity. The streets of downtown have a wealth of fantastic dining and shopping choices, providing residents and visitors alike with diverse options.

For those desiring fresh, made-from-scratch recipes and a fine dining experience, Sullivan’s Fine Food on West Broadway Avenue has delectable steaks and southern favorites like farm-raised, hand breaded catfish, shrimp and stone-ground grits and fried green tomatoes. Dinner can be polished off with light and creamy peanut butter pie or French vanilla bean banana pudding.

Winning the Blount Partnership New Business of the Year, Roost is a clever home furnishings store with interior design services on Broadway Avenue. The store is owned by Paula Osborn, a Maryville native since the age of three. It’s unique with a flair for timeless and causal style. Osborn finds many benefits in the Downtown Maryville location.
Downtown Maryville Tennessee

“I love being in the heart of my hometown and working in the upper level of my building and hearing the noises of our little city,” said Osborn. “By locating my business downtown, I have gotten to know so many wonderful people in our community. I have also had the opportunity to be a part of some committees that are working to promote and grow our downtown. I’m excited for the future of Maryville.”

One street over on East Church Avenue, the staff of Dandy Lions brings the best combination of gifts to the area. Their friendly, welcoming service, and unique, sought-after gifts and stationery provide an instant smile.

Downtown Maryville is often buzzing with activity and entertainment. Friday Night Lights, held the last Friday of every month from April through October, has something for everyone with family-friendly activities, music, food trucks and games. Local businesses often host mini-events within their businesses on the evenings of Friday Night Lights, attracting patrons.

Music enthusiasts will find many options. Barley’s Taproom & Pizzeria, located on Broadway Avenue, offers bands most nights of the week, delicious pizza and a comprehensive craft beer selection.

For those seeking the best blues music in the region, Brackins Blues Club, also on Broadway, has live music every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. While kicking back to music at Brackins, customers can enjoy a menu of delicious pub-style food, craft beer and fine bourbon.

Brackins General Manager Christina O’Rourke finds there is something special in being a downtown business.

“We are in one of the oldest buildings in Downtown Maryville, and the history is pretty cool,” said O’Rourke. “We enjoy being at the center of it all and watching the downtown grow. We try to contribute to that growth, and it’s a pretty great feeling.”

The Main Street accreditation is in its infancy, but change will soon come. For downtown businesses, it’s a valuable title.

“Just having the recognition of being a Main Street can only do great things for all of us here in Downtown Maryville,” said O’Rourke. “Foot traffic has been picking up. We’re looking forward to the future.”

Blount Partnership Director of Tourism Kim Mitchell has been an integral part of the accreditation progress and was chosen as the program’s director.

“The accreditation was made possible by the wonderful downtown businesses and community events,” Mitchell said. “We’re excited to see the downtown become a thriving community, and to be part of Main Streets across the country. This is an honor and will aid in the revitalization and economic development efforts.”

The Main Street designation is an honor for the city, which will continue its efforts to attract business and tourism to the area, making it a vibrant place for residents to call home.

The museum’s façade will be themed as a 19th century prison, which was always the desire of museum-owner, John Morgan.

Spread over two floors, the 24,000 square foot museum will include interactive displays on these subjects as well as original artifacts.

“Alcatraz East is going to make a great addition to our city,” added Earlene Teaster, the Pigeon Forge city manager. “Our city truly offers something for everyone, making it a great family-friendly destination. We look forward to having this museum become a part of our community.”
